December 31st, 2010. A party at a friend's apartment. I meet Zoé Elvinger. She mentions she lives in a château — an 11th-century Benedictine priory overlooking the Seine, in Évecquemont, 40 kilometers west of Paris. 1,285 square meters. Reconstructed in 1908 as a neoclassical folly, then acquired in 1937 by her grandfather Francis Elvinger — a pioneer of advertising theory, professor at the University of Louvain, author of eight editions of La Marque. THE HOUSE
The Ground Wrote the Script First
A Benedictine priory stood here from the early 11th century, its church given to Fécamp Abbey as early as 990. The hill still bears the name medieval charters gave it — Episcopimonte, the bishop's mount. At the Revolution, the priory was seized and sold as a bien national; the street the château stands on is named after the countess who lived here through those years. The neoclassical folly that rose on the priory's foundations in 1908 was drawn with a room for a private telephone switchboard — a rarity then, an omen now. In these photographs, a bishop rules the ground again. And somewhere in the house, a call finally comes through.
The house keeps its dates.

June 2011. Two weekends. Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Forty models arriving by train from Paris. Fifteen crew — hair, makeup, styling, assistants. €50,000 worth of lighting equipment loaned by Photocinerent, where I'd been renting gear since my return to France. Self-funded from a print collection sold to the Sofitel Saigon through a French interior designer based in Bangkok — around €14,000 that became the entire production budget.

Six to seven setups per day. Grand salon. Winter garden. Alcove salon. The château's balcony. Shot at 14mm — wide enough to swallow the room, close enough to catch the expression. Silver umbrella flash. The church bells of the priory next door rang at exactly 7pm, the moment I pressed the shutter on "Do You Believe in God!" You can't stage that.

An imaginary hotel with imaginary guests and imaginary staff. The Doorman. The Receptionist. The Concierge. The Majordome and his Garde.. The Excentric Groom… Each character dressed by a different designer. Every frame a scene from a film that was never made — sustained, sometimes extravagant, rooted in the DNA of subversive luxury and baroque theatricality.
References stacked like layers through movies & series I've watched. The Excentric Groom was born when I saw a Volevatch shower that looked like a five-star hotel luggage cart — so I put the groom inside it. Every artwork has an origin story. Most of them started as a bad joke.

The Collection d'Auteurs — Taillardat, 2010. Five designers — Chantal Thomass, Nina Campbell, Tristan Auer, Pierre-Yves Rochon, Serge Mansau — each given carte blanche by Micheline Taillardat to reinterpret an 18th-century form for the house's Collection d'Auteurs. Four of those five signatures appear in the series.

Houses classified Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant alongside emerging designers. Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré alongside street casting from the Parisian metro. The hotel had no dress code — except ambition.
